“A bruised reed he shall not break…”( Isa 42:1-3)

Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.” (Isa 42:1-3 KJV)

There are so many beautiful characteristic of God’s servant, Christ Jesus, that are truly admirable. No greater enigma than the infinite power of an Almighty God, a Heavenly Father, whom embraces the imperfections of fallen mankind. Scripture says, “A bruised reed he shall not break” (v.3a) which symbolizes the type of people we were (an Israeli nation; Old Covenant) and are (Jew and Gentile; New Covenant) before God because of our sins. We are found broken, destitute, and in need of a savior. We are as rigid as reeds that protrude out of the shallow waters. Nearly broken and folded in two but not totally destroyed. – Likened to a diminishing flame in a candle wick that’s preparing to die out. “..the smoking flax he shall not quench.” (v.3b) This is how unbelievably gentle and nourishing His, Christ’s, tender touch is. He exampled it for three and a half years in his ministry of teaching, ministry, and disciplining. Later, endowing the Church with such gifts that we too may refresh and or sustain a weary soul.
